The Gospel calls us to live in a way that is interruptible. Why should we be interruptible? What does it mean to live interruptibly?
Well for starters, Jesus was interruptible. In one instance, Jesus was speaking to an entire room full of intently listening people, when one person touched Him. Jesus stopped everything He was doing. Jesus asks who it was that touched Him and healed them because of their faith. He took the time to look away from the crowd in order to look into the face of one person.
Jesus was never afraid of going out of His way or changing His plans for the heart of one person. God would do the same for each of us too. He probably already is. What a love that is!
I think God wants us to live a life of interruptibility so that we won’t put our hope and our faith in our own schedule and plans. Each of our lives are full of boundless opportunities to lay our own plans down in order to face and fully see the people placed in front of us. Whenever we are presented with a moment to pull away from our own desires and show the face of God to whoever is wrecking the plans we thought were better than our own, we have the opportunity to see a little bit more of Gods face ourselves.
This week my squad was blessed with a beautiful opportunity to be interrupted. Similar to the World Race; Adventures in Missions has a Semesters program for recent high school graduates who go out and spend about 3 months in mission in 1 or 2 countries.
Well it turns out there was a Semesters team who for some reason lost their host last minute. They were supposed to be headed to Nicaragua and a few days before they were supposed to launch, their plans fell through and it was unclear where they would go.
Wellllll…AIM couldn’t find any new hosts for them to partner with last minute and started reaching out to existing hosts. Well, y’all remember how I told you our host here at Oceans Edge, Hannah, is the best, she IS. Hannah is the definition of interruptible. She said yes right away and opended up her ministry site, already housing 33 people, to 19 more people. That’s a whole lot of people.
We had a couple days until the semesters teams were to arrive and we spent the days literally making a space for them. Half of this house was not set up yet for people to live in.
We moved furtiture around like they were Tetris pieces. We got to assemble beds, mop floors, clean out kitchens, and pray over their spaces. Some of the people on my squad had to move out of their room and into a smaller one (done with grace and flexability) to make space for our new Semesters friends.
When they arrived at the base we got the opportunity to cheer them in and carry their bags to their rooms. We did a cheering tunnel, so fun!!!
To be honest, excitement isn’t always our first reaction to news that makes us change up our lives and comfortable rhythms. To say we weren’t a little reluctant, even if in secret, to share our space would probably be a lie. But to see them arrive with joy into a place that had been prepared specifically for them took any of that trepidation away tenfold!
YALL if you dont think that that’s how the Lord feels about us, you’re wrong!! HE IS PREPARING A ROOM SPECIFICALLY for you in heaven. You’re nametag is already on the door waiting. I’d like to picture angels putting flower vases on your bookshelves as we speak. There is a place for you. There is a place for you. There is a place for you. There is a place for everyone. There is a place being prepared in heaven but it starts on earth first. God is with you and right in the place that you are.
Love this Courtney, what a wonderful way to deal with a challenging situation. I love your perspective and I love you!
UGHHHH i love this so much. You are such a beautiful example of someone who lives a life of interuptability but ALSO living a life of excitement in the midst of interruption!
This is so encouraging Court!!! You are definitely the most interruptible person I know, you care for others so much that you’d put down whatever is in front of you to help & love. I hope some more friends are made with all those new people! You’re in there like sardines. What a gift to be reminded that God is with us even now!
COURTNEY!!!! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH SISTER
This is beautiful! I’m the squad mentor for that squad and I love that you guys were able to welcome them in and make a space for them. What a beautiful example of Jesus!
Heyyyy! I love you Courtney! It is by our faith that we can be healed. I love this story of the woman who touched Jesus’s cloth as he was walking by. She knew by her faith in him that he could heal her from her infirmities. Isn’t it amazing that the lord knows us all and is “touched” by everything we do. “Love the lord with all thine heart, lean unto him in every thought, doubt not, fear not”
Ahhh thank you!!!
Wow literally all of your comments give me such joy, thanks for the encouragement friend!!!
Amen friend! Miss you dude!
GIRL. I love that you frame the interruption as a blessing. You all are truly serving as the hands and feet of Jesus to a world that so desperately needs that selfless love. I’m SO proud of you and so excited for this story to continue to unfold! 🙂
